- > Actor Marlon Brando is a ham. For years it has been rumored
- > that the academy award winner was also a licensed radio amateur,
- > but it was not until Brando was interviewed by CNN's Larry King
- > on October the 7th that the world knew for sure.
- > Brando said that he was an Amateur Radio operator and the
- > thing he like most about the hobby was the anonymity that it
- > offers. He also said that he was in the process of updating his
- > license. The actor was very supportive of Amateur Radio but
- > stopped short of revealing his own call sign.
-
- I believe he is licensed by the government of the Society Islands
- (Tahiti) in French Polynesia. With his (anonymous) Tahiti callsign
- he must love the pileups he creates on HF!
-
- Jeff NH6IL
-
- > Modern communications appears to be an important part of
- > Brando's life. He told King that he sees the new international
- > information superhighway as coming to us quickly. Brando adds
- > that he is already a part of it through his participation in
- > America Online, but not under his real name.

- > HAM SONGS
- >
- > Finally, ham radio is a hobby that seems to have something to
- > offer everyone. Get a license and you might talk to anyone from a
- > hollywood star to an astronaut in space, and maybe even to a king.
- > On the air you might even run into one of the many well known
- > country and western recording artists like Chet Atkins WA4CZD,
- > Ronnie Milsap WB4KCG or Andrew Huddleston G3WZZ.
- > What was that last name and callsign you say? Andrew
- > Huddleston G3WZZ? Never heard of him? If you haven't already,
- > you will.
- > You see, Andrew Huddleston and his wife Lissa Ladefoged are
- > the brains and the sound behind a new album of songs written
- > especially for and about radio amateurs. And why an album for
- > hams? G3WZZ says it's all in keeping with the spirit of country:
- >
- > "To tell you the truth because there are a couple of really
- > funny dramatic stories which I thought were great to write a song
- > about. The problem is in our regular gigs which we do all around
- > Europe, Australia and New Zealand, you can't get up on stage and
- > sing a song about CQ and about morse code and about that kind of
- > thing. About problems with the wife because your always on the
- > air. So we had to make a whole CD which is only for ham radio
- > enthusiasts." Andrew Huddleston G3WZZ.
- >
- > Andrew and Lissa are not newcomers to the country music scene.
- > With seven previous albums behind them, they are popular artists
- > worldwide. Andrew tells Newsline that he and Lissa enjoyed
- > putting the album together. And for an encore?
- >
- > "Well we have been thinking about doing a video version called
- > Seek You, The Movie, because it is the whole CD is actually, it
- > tells a whole story about one little amateur radio family. And it
- > would be great to make the movie. But it depends how many people
- > out there think the idea is interesting." G3WZZ
- >
- > Well the FCC rules say that we can't play any of the album cuts
- > on your repeater. But we can tell you that hams who have heard it
- > say that Andrew and Lissa may have a ham radio hit on their hands.
- > Our favorites are the songs titled Always on the Air, On the
- > Monday Evening Gray Line, It's Great to QSO in Morse Again and Out
- > In To The Wild Blue Yonder. This last one is a tribute to those
- > hardy souls who like to travel to remote places and put them on
- > the air.
- > The name of the album is Seek You -- that's SEEK YOU. Kind
- > of a play on words. Information on getting a copy can be found in

- Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, DF4RD, DL7VEE & DX NEWS
- Letter, K4CEF & Southeastern Cluster Group, AD1C, WB2K, WB2DND, N3SL,
- K3ZO, KD4HXT, WB4IUX, N4VZ, KG4TM, N5OK, K8PYD, CO2KK, CO2OJ, EY8MM,
- AH0W/OH2LVG and W6PQS, WAPJR, W2JGR of the IRDXA for the following
- DX information.
-
- 160 METERS. Arnie, CO2KK, states he is now ready for the 160 meters DX
- season, using a 50 watt rig and rooftop inverted L antenna (55 meters
- overall length), working against a counterpoise. Those interested in
- skeds may write to his InterNet address, acoro@tinored.cu, or may call
- him on the phone at 53-7-293738. QSL to his home address: Prof. Arnaldo
- Coro Antich, Ave 23 No. 3413 Altos, Entre 34 y 36, Playa, Ciudad Habana,
- Cuba 11300 or use is PO Box Number: Arnaldo Coro, PO Box 6060, Habana
- Cuba 10600.
-
- 80 METERS. Every day, from the middle of October, a group of Asian
- operators (EX0V, EY8MM, UN7VV, AP2SD, UK's and EZ's) are looking for
- NA West Coast stations on 3795 MHz between 1200 and 1400z. They use
- directional antennas listening long path.
-
- A6, U.A.E. Don, WB2DND, will be visiting Dubai from November 11-16th.
- Look for him on 20 meters at 1300z on either 14025 or 14090 (RTTY). Also,
- he will concentrate on 80/160 meters each morning at 0200z. On 14240 kHz
- at 2100z, he has a sked with his father and son each day and he will take
- callers after their QSO.
-
- BV, TAIWAN. WB4IUX reports he has been asked to visit organizations of his
- company in Japan and Taiwan to make some presentations and carry out
- some training. The final approval for the trip should be received next
- week. He will be in Taiwan either during the November 7/8/9 or November
- 16/17/18 timeframe, and is working feverishly on getting permission to
- operate. If he can secure this permission, he plans to operate almost
- solely on 80 and 40 meters to give those low band operators a chance
- for BV. The low end of 40 meters in SE Asia is a mess, so it isn't easy
- to find a clear frequency. His plan is to be in the 7008-7012 and
- 3508-3512 windows. He promises more info as it develops particularly in
- reference to the exact dates and the station from which he will be
- operating.
-
- CO9, CAYO CAGUAMA, CUBA. A group of hams from Cuba and Portugal will
- activate CO9OTA in the archipelago Jardines de la Reina between November
- 7-9th. (ed. An IOTA number is not available at this time because we
- believe that this may be a new IOTA number.)
-
- EY NEWS (TAJIKISTAN). Nodir, EY8MM, plans to take part in CQWW SSB Contest
- as a Single Op/Multi bands entry using his home callsign. He will pay
- special attention to 160/80/40 meters and will be the only station from
- Tajikistan in this contest. QSL for EY8MM via DL8WN.
- Nodir mentions he and others will also plan to be active during CQ WW
- CW Contest as EY3A. The team will consist of EY8MM, WW, QX, CQ, JX and
- UA3AB. They may operate as M/M or M/S.
- During the month of November, the special callsign EY70D will be used
- to celebrate 70th aniversary of Dushanbe City. QSL via DL8WN.
-
- GUANTANAMO BAY COFFEE CUP. As we mentioned in last's weeks bulletin
- (OPDX.179), Jeff, WI2T, will be active in the CQWW SSB Contest as a
- Single Op (work sked permitting) signing KG4JO. A coffe cup from KG4 is
- being offered to those stations that work KG4JO on all six bands during
- the CQWW phone contest. The cups will be sent out in time for Christmas
- to the callbook address of the station.
-
- HS, THAILAND. Fred, K3ZO/HS0ZAR, has just returned from HS-land to
- report that the members of the Radio Amateur Society of Thailand are
- busy planning major efforts in the CQWW SSB and CW contests. Look for
- HS7AS and HS0AC in the contests. Meanwhile, the station at the Asian
- Institute of Technology, E20AT (formerly HS0A), is being refurbished
- with a full-sized 2-element yagi for 40 meters. Fred also reports many
- more Thais have now received permission to set their stations up at home
- and you will begin to see more activity from these stations on HF. There
- are presently 460 citizens of Thailand who hold licenses which give them
- persmission to operate on the HF bands. This is 460 out of a total of some
- 95,000 licensees altogether, the vast majority of them being VHF no-code
- licensees. The ham population has increased enough so that the Thais are
- able to support a net on 40 meters. It is on SSB, meets at 1300z on 7060
- kHz. A CW net has also been started at 1400Z on 7015 kHz. Zone 26 should
- become very available in the upcoming year.
-
- HZ, SAUDI ARABIA. Terry, N4KT will be active in the CQWW SSB Contest
- operating HZ1AB solo on 3.7 MHz band. Last year he operated 40 meters
- single band entry, and this year he wants to try 80 meter single band.
-
- IMPORTANT NOTICE. Steve, N3SL, reports that anyone still needing an AH1A
- QSL card should resubmit now. The Mile Hi DX Association will close the
- post office box effective February 1, 1995. All unclaimed U.S. and JA
- QSLs were sent to the respective bureaus nearly a year ago, so check
- there first. After February 1st, K1ER and N3SL will have the logs.
-
- IRDXA EQUIPS HF0POL FOR RTTY. The International RTTY DX Association
- (IRDXA) has donated a Hal RTTY Terminal for use at HF0POL, the Polish
- Antarctic Expedition Base on King George Islands in the South Shetland
- Group. The equipment was shipped via air to the supply station in Puenta
- Arenas, Chile. There it will meet up with the new HF0POL operator, Andy
- Grotha, SP2GOW, for the supply ship voyage to the base on King George
- Island. Wald, SP4KM, organized the RTTY effort and trained Andy on the
- keys. Dxers looking forward to this new one should be aware it may be
- several months before Andy gets to the base and appears on RTTY. Keep an
- eye on the VK2SG RTTY DX notes for updates.
-
- KC6, BELAU. Jim, WV5S, and Coy, N5OK, of the Oklahoma DX Association will
- be returning to Belau (Palau). They may be using their previous calls of
- KC6SS and KC6OK. Operations will be October 25th to November 2nd and will
- include activity in the CQWW-SSB Contest. Emphasis will be on CW, WARC,
- 80/160 meters and with some RTTY activity. QSL via home calls. After
- their stay in Belau, they will also operate from Yapp, November 2-9th
- using the calls V63SH and V63OH.
-
- NEW QSL MANAGER. Adam, N7VEW, will now handle cards for 5V7MD, Dave
- Moody in Togo and Randy, TJ1JR in Cameroon. Adam has announced the
- following skeds: Wednesdays, 2230z on 14165 kHz with TJ1JR and Thursdays,
- 2200z on 14165 kHz with 5V7MD. After the sked, usually 5V7MD or TJ1JR will
- stick around or move up the band to work some stations. QSL TJ1JR or 5V7MD,
- to N7VEW 1994 CBA or Adam J. Boettiger, 6911 Naches Heights Rd., Yakima,
- WA 98908 with an SASE. Please no bureau cards. Both stations are
- missionaries and will be there for a few years.
-
- QSL BUREAU (8th Area) SLOWING DOWN! Leo Fry, K8PYD, Manager of 8th Area
- QSL Bureua, informs OPDX that processing of cards are down in the 8th
- Area, as well in other bureaus. Leo says, "Our incoming work load a year
- ago was an average of 50 lbs. a week. Sometimes it was as high as 100 lbs.
- a week. Now, since last December, it has been 5 lbs. a week. That is a
- 90% cut! Out of that, at least 50% goes to DX QSL Managers leaving only
- 5% of the original load of a year ago for the remainder of the hams. The
- active DXers are not aware of this and they continually call and inquire
- where their cards are." (ed. "SEND DIRECT" is becoming common place on
- the bands by DX stations. WHY? Good question! The bureau system was set
- in place to help lower the cost of "SENDING DIRECT" to both sides of a
- QSL exchange. For a new DXer it has become very expensive to QSL as the
- price of postage continues to rise. Usually the only stations that asked
- for direct cards were major DXpeditions. It would be a shame if this
- system is beginning to break down because there are a lot of individuals
- (on their own free time) who are involved in the sorting and distributing
- of cards.)
-
- QSL CORRECTION. The QSL information for the upcoming DXpedition to
- Revillagigedos, XF4M, is: AA6BB, Gerald D. Branson, 93787 Dorsey Lane
- Junction City, OR. 97448. (Not JH1AST as reported earlier.)
-
- SU, EGYPT. There have been reports that SU2MT will be active in both
- CQWW SSB & CW as a Multi/Single entry. Meanwhile, look for him on 15
- meters around 1200z or 20 meters between 1700 and 2000z.
-
- ST0, SOUTHERN SUDAN. John, PA3CXC, is once again active as PA3CXC/ST0.
- This trip it seems that he is concentrating mostly on CW, the WARC bands
- and 40 meters (few spots on 15 meters). Check around 18075 kHz between
- 1800 and 2200z, 7005 kHz around 0315z and 21020 kHz after 2200z. His
- length of stay is unknown at this time. QSL via his homecall.
-
- TI9, COCOS ISLANDS. TI9JJP is now active. Activity seems to have started
- on October 22nd. The length of this operation will last until the 29th.
- Check 14195 kHz and the usual DX frequencies.
-
- TK, CORSICA. DL6RAI, DL5MAE, DL5MFF, DJ0MBU and DF4RD will be visiting
- TK5EL to be active in the upcoming CQWW DX SSB Contest as a Multi/Sinlge
- entry. They will try to be active before the contest (24th of October)
- using their own TK/callsigns (e.g. TK/DL6RAI, etc.).
-
- VP2E, ANGUILLA. K1DG and KA1XN will operate during CQWW SSB as a
- Multi/Single entry (No callsigns were mentioned). After the contest,
- look for FS/K1DG and/or PJ7/K1DG for a few days on various bands and
- modes.
-
- VP5, TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS. A group from the North Florida DX Association
- (NFDXA) will be traveling to VP5 for the CQWW phone contest. The group
- last year, as a Multi/Multi entry, took 3rd place in the world. This year
- they plan to operate as Multi/Single using the callsign VP5Y.
-
- XX9, MACAO. G3SXW and G3TXF have been active on the air as XX9SXW and
- XX9TXF. Activity has been mainly on CW only all bands including the
- WARC bands. They will be active until October 27th.
-
- YI, IRAQ. Robert, N4VZ, in a QSO with YI9CW, found out that the YI
- station's current license does not authorize him to use 30 meters. YI9CW
- states that he has applied for the authorization and that he is hoping he
- will receive it at the first of the year.
-
- ZONE 2. John/WB2K and Davis/WJ2O are venturing up to the great white
- north to ensure Zone 2 will be LOUDLY heard in CQWW SSB this year!!!
- They will be operating 2 separate Single-Op stations from locations
- about 20 miles apart, high power, beams, and below freezing temps!
- WB2K will be signing VE2TJA and WJ2O will be signing WJ2O/VE2. QSL via
- their home calls. John says, "Work us...A LOT!!! Help us stay awake
- (and warm!). Zone 2 snowballs for anyone that works us on 6 bands."
-
- SPECIAL NOTE FROM EDITOR. The will not be a bulletin next week (October
- 31st). Please continue to send your DX information.

-
- FAX YOUR DX INFORMATION NOW! Faxing is available Monday/Wednesday/Friday
- from 0430 to 2330z only. The number is 216-237-8208 and the FAX card is

- From: pve@dg13.cec.BE (VEKINIS Peter)
- Subject: SELCAL
-
- All,
- In aviation, all transtlantic travel require aircraft to have selcal ID
- units on board. SELCAL is a 4 letter code which is used to beep an aircraft
- on HF so that the pilot does not have to listen to all the frequency
- chatter. In other words it's a tone squelch.
-
- The system works on tone separation of 2 tones. In other words a dual tone
- signal is emitted where say, one tone is emited at 850Hz and the other at
- 1041Hz, their separation identifying what signals these are.
-
- SELCAL signals are tones from A to R and they are transmitted in two pairs,
- ie the pilot would say "SELCAL check, AQDB" and the ground control would
- send these two dual tone signals. Since this is SSB, the decoder looks for
- separation of tones rather than the tones themselves.
-
- Does anyone have any idea if there is a device on HF handling SELCAL. I need
- to implement it on HF for a net and the closest I have found in Motron's
- HF-alert (it works on morse code however). Anyone know of a simple way of
- doing a selcal unit? I can suply the microchip programmed (with the help id
- Advanced Micro Devices) if anyone can supply easy schematics for the rest or
- help.
- Any info would be appreciated.
- Thanks

-
- NOONE has any right over anyone elseon frequencies. If the ARRL starts a
- bulletin on the frequenciy and steps on other QSOs in progress, they are
- just are liable as anyone else.
- Of course they can always say, "I didnt hear them."
- K1MAN's 45 minute broadcast on 14275, about 6 times a day, steps on others
- most of the time, because it's an automatic broadcast.
- But then such is life....
